Naung Naung, a native of Mon state in Burma, came to Mae Sot to look for a job due to the hardship and difficulties to survive back home. In Maetong village, Mae Sot, he was provided a tent and offered to work for a farm by a Thai farm owner. His tent was located in front of the employer’s residence right across the street.
On February 6, 2010, after doing the clean up works for the date palm trees, he came back to his tent taking a rest. At about 7pm he rushed to his employer to inform when he saw some suspectible people in the farm. While he was at the gate of the house, the employer came out of the door and shot him in the left leg. Therefore he was yelling his name and calling the neighbors for help. The neighbors called PVA at 11pm. PVA members had to take him to the student clinic due to the excessive bleeding.
When arrived to the employer’s house, PVA noticed that he was an old man with a poor vision. He later explained PVA that he shot him by mistake assuming if he was a thief. He also said that he barely knew Naung Naung because he worked for only two days.
PVA learnt that Naung Naung was very drunk loosing his mind at that night. Besides, he shouldn’t go to other people’s house at night since they didn’t know each other well.
Note: Some people coming from Burma had been carelessly living in Thailand without any discipline and unity regardless of their illegal status. At the same time, some of the Thai employers taking advantage of their illegal status, treated them unfairly and exploited their labors. Therefore PVA would like to urge the migrant workers who were seeking to work in Thailand for their better lives to behave themselves in a good manner and to live on with reasonably fair among the society by avoiding the unnecessary confrontation with the natives and among each others.
