An underage girl was tied and beaten up

On May 5, 2012, Soe Moe Aung aka Chit Aung, a resident of Kappiban, reported to PVA that his wife, a 15 years old teenager was disappeared after they had an argument. The couple was married about a month ago. Even though the wife was an underage girl, the mother had permitted her to get married. On April 30, the couple got an argument after the husband found out that the wife had kept a man’s phone number. At that point, the husband threatened her to beat up and kill if she did it again. The wife had run away after that. After he found out that the wife was nowhere to be found, the husband came to PVA and asked to help looking for his wife. However, on May 6, he found her on his own and brought her back home. When arrived to home, the wife was tied up with a rope, laid down on the house floor and beaten up severely by the husband. The wife’s mother was cheerleading the incident, according to neighbor. The wife’s elder sister finally reported to PVA in this regard. When arrived to the residence, PVA witnessed that the wife still was on the floor and tied up with a rope. Therefore, PVA brought the couple and the mother to Irrawaddy office. Hence the case was under the concern of both PVA and Irrawaddy organizations, PVA requested to Irrawaddy to solve the case. Irrawaddy sent the wife to a women and children protection center for her physical and mental rehabilitation, in accordance with the protection of children’s rights. It also educated both the husband and the mother that such action had met with a punishable crime. And, finally, it warned them not to repeat the same mistake again in the future.

Small prawns attempting to swim across a sea

On May 6, 2012, Ma Cho, the mother of Ma Hla Hla Htwe (15) a 9th grader, residing in Thathon town came to PVA office, by claiming that her daughter had eloped with Maung Ye Aung (16) a 9th grader, and ask for help. According to her, her daughter, who went to see the result of her 9th grade final exam at the school on April 24, was illegally taken to Mae Sot by Maung Ye Aung aka Yahmu. PVA found out that the teenage couple was living with Maung Ye Aung’s cousin at her resident in Mae Sot. With the help of its members, PVA brought them to the office from the cousin’s house in Honphai and inspected. According to Ma Hla Hla Htwe under 15 years old, her mother had forced her to get married with her second cousin without her consent. She finally confessed that that’s the reason she decided to elope with her lover. However, PVA had comforted and explained the girl that it’s illegal for a teenager under 18 to get married. PVA had managed to persuade the girl to go back home along with her mother eventually. Likewise, Maung Ye Aung was allowed to go back to his cousin for the reunion of his parents.

The brutality of a father

On February 16, 2012, a mother named Daw Mi Nge and her child came to PVA at 8 pm, and reported that her husband U Yarsin (40) whipped his daughter named Yinnut (9) with a cable wire for several times.The marks and bruises were found the child’s head, leg, back and shoulders. PVA had to send the child to Mae Sot hospital when she was passed out due to severe pain.

According to Daw Mi Nge, she got married with U Yarsin for 22 years with 4 children. They were trash pickers. They went from house to house collecting discarded materials such as packaging, plastic bottles, broken metal to feed their family. All the money was controlled by U Yarsin. At that day, Yinnut didn’t realize her father’s calling her name while she was watching TV. That was the reason for U Yarsin to get mad and whip her with the cable wire causing the marks and bruises.

The doctors from the Mae Sot hospital provided the necessary treatments for the girl and reported the case to the authorities for further action. The authorities had arrested U Yarsin for the legal action finally.

Three days old baby was about to be sold

Ma Sabel (19) was abandoned by her husband named Maung Phyo Than Htun when she was 4 months pregnant. Ma Phyo had shared a place for Ma Sabel, who had no one to depend on at that time, to stay at her house for 11 days. She also promised Ma Sabel to look for someone who could foster her baby if she couldn’t take care of, and Ma Sabel agreed to it.

On August 23, 2010, Ma Sabel had given birth to a baby girl at Maetaw clinic, and she went to Ma Phyo’s house on August 25. She asked Ma Phyo that she would like to reconsider about giving her baby away. At that point, Ma Phyo had grabbed the baby and handed over to a muslim couple by ignoring her request. 

Ma Sabel came to PVA and appealed to help getting her baby back on August 26. PVA noticed that her shirt was all wet by the milks spelling out of her breasts due to the lack of having her baby.

PVA rushed to Ma Phyo’s house where she wasn’t there. PVA joining force with CPPR and BLC pursued the search in Muhargiwin quarter, and brought the baby back. The three days old baby girl was returned to mother finally.

PVA found out that the baby was about to sell to the Hmo ethnic people, according to the sources. Now, Ma Sabel and her baby were taken care of by a family that owned “Uwellay” tea-shop.

PVA was reported that Maung Arkar (6) a student from Sermuhtaw primary school (Burmese primary school) in Kuppiban village, Mae Sot was seriously injured by his mother on May 20, 2009.

PVA went to the school and sort out the problem. Maung Arkar had sustained the bruises on the head, swelling on both cheeks, swelling left ear, swelling legs and knees and the bruises on both back and chest. According to the teachers, the school had warned her three times not to torture the child already.

PVA joining force with the teachers, the village head, Ko Thant Zin from CPPR brought both parents and educated them that torturing a child was the violation of human rights which could lead a severe legal consequence. Then, PVA decided to hand over the child to SAW for the protection finally.

Under SAW’s management, Maung Arker was sent to the hospital for the bloods transfusion later. PVA had spared the mother for the legal action because she had a four months old baby with her now.

The residents of Teak Woods in Mae Pa village named Maung Chanmye Aung (16) and Ma Zinmin Aye (15) had eloped on July 18, 2011. The parents of the girl asked PVA to look for their missing daughter. 

The PVA central committee in Maepa was informed to look for both children by the head-quarter. On July 19, both of them were found by PVA that brought the children and their parents to the office and negotiated them for the children to go back their homes later. PVA also educated them about the legal problem for underage marriage and told them that the children in their teens should be remained under the parents’ protection. Both parents had signed an agreement to take good care of their children in the future also.

Ma Arsinar (7) a daughter of Daw Nonmarbi and a trash-picker sneaked into U Ahdular’s kitchen and stole some onions, chilis and three spoons total worth of 30baht. U Ahdular who caught her in action had punched and beat the little girl. This news was reported to PVA by a responsible resident on July 25, 2010.

The investigation found that U Abdular tied her with a rope and tortured her by punching, kicking, beating and stepping on the stomach.

On June 30, 2011, the regional committee 7 of PVA in Maepa had received a reported that a four years old girl was abused and the abuser had been held by the authority.

PVA central committee had decided to take the legal action. During the investigation, the mother of the victim told PVA that the abuser named Maung Pho Kyaw was allowed to the temporary stay at her house due to his recent unemployment. At that day at about 1pm while no one was at home, he sexually molested the child. And, a neighbor who witnessed the incident had reported to her later.

After the hearing, PVA had handed over the child molester to Thai police and filed the case for further legal action. Also the child was sent to the hospital for the medical treatment by PVA.

Now, Ma Dardar is sent to the “Foundation for Women” for the protection in order to proceed the legal process forward. 

The illegal marriage with an under age girl stolen from the parents

On October 4, 2011, a resident of (-----) in Mae Sot named Ma Hla Oo had reported to PVA for her missing daughter named Ma Zarchi Myint a 15 years old.

According to her, Ma Zarchi Myint had never returned home after going out for shopping. When the mother inquired her friends, they said she had gone along with Maung Moe Win a resident of (----) in Mae Sot lately.

Therefore, PVA along with (KYO) visited to Maung Moe Win’s house and found the girl there. After the negotiation explaining that she still was an underage girl, he agreed to return the girl to her parents.

During the negotiation, PVA found out that the family of Maung Moe Win didn’t understand the legal consequence of marrying an underage girl at all. Thus, PVA had decided to educate both parents and children among the Burmese community with regard to the legal consequence of the illegal marriage.

In Ma Zarchi’s case, PVA and K.Y.O had educated the parents of both parties about the consequence and negotiated them to settle it in a civil manner. And, the girl was finally returned her home.

A Thai man who stole an underage Burmese girl

A couple named Ko Than Aye and Ma Than Than claimed PVA for the return of their child named Ma Nwe Hnaung (15) was stolen by a Thai man. 

PVA along with the authorities of PVA No. 2 zone and the Thai local authorities rushed to the man’s house in Maeku village, managed to return the girl to her parents on the same day at 9pm.

PVA found out that the Thai man named Arpae a married man with three childeren had been pimping the girl as his unofficial wife since six months ago. PVA filed the case as child molestation to the authorities and demanded for the justice.

PVA also asked for the compensation for the parents and ordered the parents to move to a safer environment.

 Maung Ye Win Htun a 12 years old was sent to a vocational training under the guidance of a TV repair man named Ko Maung Zaw at a TV repair shop in Mae Sot by his parents, who coundn’t effort for his further education. On December 2, 2010 Maung Ye Win Htun taking Ko Maung Zaw’s order to buy some equipments for the repair shop in the market had borrowed a bicycle from Ko That Naing Oo for shopping. When returned, Ko That Naing Oo started to kick and punch the child in anger for taking too long. And, the child had suffer the pain in the stormach and the bruises on the face as a result. 

The repair man along with the child came to PVA and asked for the legal action in this regard.

PVA brought Ko That Naing Oo to the office and made him pay for the child’s medical costs and grievance by educating him how to control his anger finally.

On November 23, 2011 PVA received a report claiming that an 8 years old girl residing in Maekulun village was raped, and the rapist was held by the local people. A central committee member of PVA regional No.9 rushed to the scene for the emergency medical treatment and the investigation.

According to the mother, she had married with Kyaw Oo, the rapist, four years ago and had a child with him. However, the daughter Ma Khine Marwai was not his child but from her previous marriage.

On November 19, 2010 while the mother named Ma Hla Hla Wai was away from home collecting the debts from the people, the husband named Kyaw Oo had raped the girl by threating her life if she told the mother about it. The girl therefore had to keep her mouth shut. Five days later, the other children playing with her reported to the mother that Ma Khine Marwai couldn’t play very well due to the severe pain in her vajaina by blaming the stepfather who committed rape against her.

Although the husband denied it, she finally found the bruises and bloods in the child’s vajaina. And, she had reported to PVA regional committee No.9 which eventually could manage to make the husband to confess his crime.
