On June 13, 2009, the Burmese employees of a clothing factory named Honta in Maepa, Mae Sot township were not just denied their demand for a day-off/week but also told them to ask for the permission to go outside by the factory administration. When coming back from outside on their half day-off, the 33 employees were denied to get back to the factory causing them to beg the head of the village for the temporary stay in the village. Later, the head informed the factory manager, who investigated the leader of the group immediately after, for their return. When the 33 employees replied that they had no leader of any kind, the manager instantly fired three female workers without any given reason.
On June 15, 2009 the workers staged a protest calling for the rehiring of those three. And, the manager ordered the 85 workers to pack their belongings and to gather in front of the factory by threating them to be fired. All the workers there were not provided any food or water for the whole day.
The Burmese workers, who were unfairly fired by the manager, were about to leave the factory
As soon as the news was heard, PVA immediately informed the Sawadikan office that had the official responsibility to negotiate between the employers and employees for the urgent intervention. On June 16, the Sawadikan rightiusly intervened the case deciding to pay for those who were fired and ordering the employer to honor the rights of the workers who were supposed to be remained in the factory at the afternoon of the same day finally.
PVA along with (BLC) and (LLC) continued to fight for the compensations of the three workers who were recently fired, and transferred the case of the 85 workers to Yaungchioo worker’s organization for further action.
