PVA received a phone call on November 14, 2011 telling that their boss, a Thai woman named Phi Sanchit kicked the 21 migrnat workers out of their work in the middle of the night when they refused to work overtime due to the lack of full payment.
One of the migrant workers said, “We work at Phi Sanchit’s clothing factory in Maeku village, Mae Sot. We have to work overtimes from 6pm to 10pm everyday. We only get 80baht/day still. That’s why we try to protest against it by not working overtime. The boss, who don’t appreciate what we do, kicked us out in the middle of the night. Now, we are hiding in the woods from being afraid of the arrest by the paramilitary forces.”
The migrant workers at PVA office
When PVA arrived there, the 21 migrant workers under the flash lights in a plantation were surrounded and searched by the paramilitary troops with the guns. PVA officials told the head of the village and the paramilitary troops that they were there to intervene in this case. They also explained the authorities what happened between the employer and employees eventually. Then, the authorities left the scene without taking any further action after they realized that they were misinformed by the employer.
PVA took them to the office by a truck, and provided them a temporary shelter. Later, it could manage to get another factory jobs for them, and to seek a legal action against their employer to pay for their grievance, with the help of the worker’s dispute office (Sawadikan) and LLC.
