A soldier named Maung Yarzar (22) of the regiment No.525 with the personal identication number Ta/448220 had run away from his post and arrived at PVA office on July 17, 2011.
According to his story, he had arrived to Mae Sot for the first time and worked at a glue products shop with a friend in 2008. Later they both were sentenced two years and four months imprisonment for stealing. When they were sent back to Burma side of border after the prison terms, they were rearrested by the authority at 17 gate demanding 2400 baht fine that they couldn’t effort to pay. Meantime, an army officer from the regiment No.525 offered a help for their freedom if they both agreeded to be recruited by the army. Thus, he was sent to Magwe recruit center and trained at Phaung Gyi military training later. On June 10, 2011 he was posted at the regiment No.525 in Moulmein as a private. He had run away from there and reached to Mae Sot via Myawaddy on July 12, 2011.
During the conversation, Maung Yarzer said, “At the 17 gate a woman grabbed my 800 baht and spared some rice in turn. She slapped my face by asking more money. A soldier had threatened my life if I refused to join the army. I found five other young men in the gate for the recruit. My friend and I were persuade by an officer from the regiment No.525. During my stay at the gate, I had to work the hard jobs by eating one meal a day everyday.”
While talking about his experience in the army, he said, “The atrocities and discrimination were rampant in the army. No comrade mentality was existed in the army nowadays. The lower ranking officers and the soldiers were inhumanely treated by the superiors in our daily life.” He added that more and more soldiers would run away from the army due to the prevailing circumstances.
Therefore PVA provided a safe-heaven for him and looked for a job at the safe and suitable place for him to work.
